What does student engagement mean to you? How do you know if your students are engaged? Why is student engagement an important topic? Student engagement means students are actively listening and participating during instruction. Students are curious about what they are learning and striving to succeed. I know they are engaged if they are raising their hands volunteering answers, asking questions, and following along with instruction. Student engagement is an important topic becuase students need to be engaged to learn and understand the material we are trying to teach them. They also need to be able to recall the information later, and they will do this more when they were engaged in learning the material in the first place.
To me, student engagement means students are not only actively participating in the lesson, but focused and interested in the instruction. As a band teacher, it is easy to hear if the students are engaged or not. Disengaged students or bands don't start together, start in the wrong spot, fall behind in the music, or give up, whereas engaged students play the music together, are ready to spend time fixing mistakes, and oftentimes will rush the music. Student engagement is important as when students are interested and focused on the lesson, they will retain so much more information. From a band perspective, the music gets learned a lot easier and the overall sound is much better. Overall, it is noticeable when a class is engaged and the difference is remarkable.
What does student engagement mean to you? How do you know if your students are engaged? Why is student engagement an important topic?
Student engagement means that students are taking ownership of their learning by participating in class discussions, answering questions, participating in activities, and asking questions for clarity. I know if students are engaged if they are doing all the above that I listed, but also can tell in their demeanor. Student engagement is an important topic because it’s a way in how students learn and show their learning. If students are not engaged, they are not going to grow as learners.
To me, student engagement means that students are interested, curious, and invested in class. An engaged student asks questions, participates, and connects with the material. Student engagement is an important topic because it can increase motivation, eliminate unwanted behaviors, and encourages persistence and retention. Engagement also correlates to bigger things like standardized testing scores and dropout rates. If students are engaged, they want to be at school and in your class. As an English teacher, I know my students are engaged in class because they are able to complete assignments with little to no help because they were invested in direct instruction. When we read novels, I know they are engaged because they want to continue reading, even when we are finished with the assigned pages for the day. I try my best to produce engaging activities to start out each day and I have definitely noticed a difference!
What does student engagement mean to you? How do you know if your students are engaged? Why is student engagement an important topic?
As a social studies teacher for almost 30 years student engagement for me is when students are eager to learn, they are prepared, and enthusiastic. That doesn't always mean sitting quietly working on their assignments but asking questions and contributing to conversations. I'm more concerned about students making connections with the past and the present and recognizing similarities throughout history rather than memorizing people, places, and dates.
I feel students are engaged when they are prepared for class, ask questions, participate in conversations, and respectfully challenge ideas or debate issues.
As mentioned in the book, student engagement is a timeless priority and vital to positively influence students which affects how they feel about themselves and their future especially at the middle school which is where the decline in engagement begins.
Student engagement to me means that my students are actively involved, curious, and motivated to participate in learning experiences that are meaningful to them. Engagement isn’t just sitting quietly—it’s exploring, interacting, asking questions, making choices, and expressing themselves through play, communication, or movement.
I know my students are engaged when I see focused attention, positive affect (smiling, laughing, excitement), participation in activities, and attempts to communicate or interact with materials, peers, or adults. Even brief moments of sustained interest or repeated attempts at a task show engagement.
Student engagement is important because it drives learning, builds independence, and supports social-emotional growth. When students are genuinely engaged, they retain skills better, develop confidence, and feel a sense of belonging in the classroom. In ECSE, engagement is critical because our youngest learners thrive when learning is hands-on, meaningful, and connected to their interests and experiences.

Student engagement means the students are curious about the topic , actively listening and are staying on task with what we are doing
I know if my students are engaged by seeing if they are staying on task, or are reverting to something else (coloring , taking out their phone etc). I can also see if they are filling out the guided notes. Asking questions or adding to discussion is another way I can tell if my students are engaged
Without engagement , it is really hard to learn and absorb information, hence why this topic is so important.
What does student engagement mean to you? How do you know if your students are engaged? Why is student engagement an important topic?
For me, student engagement means that students are actively participating in the activity of the day. They are not sitting out and watching, but physically joining in a playing the game. If they are sitting out because "they don't want to play", then for me they are not engaged. I really preach to my students that I don't care how good they are at something, I don't care if it's not their favorite game or activity; I just want them to try their best. I tell them that I want them to try, because maybe they will end up liking the activity and also they will benefit from the exercise. Student engagement is important because in my setting, if students are not engaged, then they are not learning how to live a healthy, active lifestyle which is so important for their overall health as well as their future selves.
