What was the most important takeaway from this video for you?  Explain why.

  1. I think it's important to make connections and really get to know your students. Students face a lot of other issues that affect them while they are in school. The more they can trust you, the better relationship you'll have with your students. If you know they have something on their mind that happened at their home that morning, because they trusted you enough to tell you about it, you will know why they didn't participate in the classroom discussion or why they were very quiet in class.

I think my biggest takeaway was understanding what students are saying from their perspective. They may not mean it as plainly as we see it. Explaining to them how each subject can help and effect their everyday lives is important. This may change their perspective on that class becuase they have a different understanding of how that class will benefit them. Another huge takeaway was knowing your students. Knowing when they need something other than content.

  3. The biggest takeaway for me was the idea of "selling" your class to the students. It hit me, because every once in a while, I have a student say "why are we here, this class isn't important" and I know if I explain the actual details of why the class is important, it would be boring and no one would listen. I agree that it is important to know your "customers" (students) and "market" your class to them. I can't explain the literal reason as to why my class is important, but I can relate the reasoning in a way that is important to the students.

  4. The biggest takeaway that I got from this video is that we need to sell it. We need to get students engaged right from the first day of school and get them excited to come back!

  5. The most important takeaway for me was that great people aren't great because they don't make mistakes; they're great because they get up and they start over and learn from those mistakes. I think this is important for my students to understand because they automatically think if they're not good at something now, they won't ever be good at it or they give up. Part of learning is to understand the mistakes we are making and learn how to avoid making those mistakes again. No one is ever perfect at something the first time they do it. There are times that I have to remind myself of this in the classroom and recognize that I'm not perfect either. We all have mistakes that we can learn from.

  6. What was the most important takeaway from this video for you? Explain why.

Teachers are salesmen, was he most important takeaway for me. When he mentioned something to the effect of, we need to make connections because Google has facts that students can look up. We need to make our content relevant to students by not only making personal connections but also by showing students the connections between our content and their lives. and we have to sell them on that idea to keep them engaged.

  7. My most important takeaway from this video was the value of understanding where students are coming from. Recognizing their experiences, perspectives, and emotions allows me to meet them where they are, build stronger relationships, and tailor learning experiences that are meaningful and supportive. This understanding is essential for fostering engagement, trust, and growth in my ECSE classroom.

  8. The biggest take away for me was that it is my job to sell my class. I teach 8th grade and just like the book states their engagement is starting to decline by 8th grade, so I need to sell my subject. All too often I hear students tell me they aren't good at my subject or they hate it- how can I change that- SELL it!!! When the speaker discussed the first day of classes and how everyone goes over class rules and expectations - we should instead do something fun and exciting that deals with what students will be learning this year- this will foster engagement and their excitement to learn. I am already thinking about what to do the first day in the fall.

  9. I think the most important takeaway from this video is the energy he has, and the strategy of selling the content to your class. I liked the "diamond" cereal example. Information Improve!!!

  10. My biggest takeaway is RAPPORT RAPPORT RAPPORT. I have said this many times on other blog posts- because it is continuously reinforced. The better relationship you have with your students, the better they will learn. It is interesting that many of the TYC books / videos I have watched keep mentioning the importance of relationships.

I love love love the part about taking away the fear of making mistakes! I preach to my students all the time that if they want to be good at something it takes practice. We get better through practice and not giving up. I tell my students that it is okay if someone is better than you. Your job is to worry about yourself and do what you can do to get better. I also remind my students that it's okay to make mistakes. It's even better if we learn from our mistakes. I just loved everything about this point and will be using it in my classes next week, because I think it's such a great reminder!
