I will use videos for my attention getter for Social Studies. We will be starting our US part of Social Studies for 4th grade and I will use the CNN 10 youtube video for the day to show students how important it is to stay aware of current issues and topics in our country and world. History does effect our everday lives in more ways than we think. CNN 10 is great for kids becuse they are talking about real issues and topics that are happening around us. Kids like to be informed and know what is going on. They will get them excited to learn more about why things are the way they are because of our history.

  2. An attention getter that I’m going to try this week is: games/challenges. In math, my students are working on addition and subtraction within 20. I would start the lesson by students logging in to Blooket and we would work on the skill of adding and subtracting within 20. This would be a great warm up to get students ready for the math lesson.

  3. This week, I will use the games/challenges as an attention getter. I always start with warm-ups which are important in band, but the students find them boring. I love activating the competitive side of my students as it gets them to try their absolute hardest even when it is something "boring" like warm-ups. I will pit the sections against each other to see who can play our chromatic scale with the fewest incorrect notes..

  4. An attention getter I'm going to use this week is to use videos. We are starting a unit on conservation in nature and I could use many movie trailers as a way to introduce our unit. "The Lorax" and "Wall-E" are two movies that I know many of my middle school students have probably seen before. However, they probably haven't watched them while thinking about ways that we can protect our Earth. After watching the trailers, we can discuss ways that characters in the movies destroyed Earth and use that knowledge to avoid making those mistakes in real life.

An attention getter that I am going to use in the classroom this week is a combination of enrolling questions and stories. As a social studies teacher I am constantly trying to relate the past to the present by making my content relevant to the students life. When teaching why many Native American tribes sided with the French during the French & Indian War (Seven Years War) as opposed to the British I use an analogy of to convey how the two generally treated the Native Americans. I ask students to imaging a friend needing a place to stay and tell a fictional story about how that friend slowly takes over their home & kicks them out- the British. Then I ask them to imagine that friend and change the story with them helping around the house, paying rent, buying food, and more- the French. Who's the better friend and who would you decide to form an alliance with during war?

  6. I would use stories as an attention-getter to introduce an upcoming lesson about dental health. I could start the lesson by reading a short, engaging story about a character who forgets to brush their teeth and experiences funny or surprising consequences. As I read, I would use expressive voices and gestures to make the story come alive, pausing at key moments to ask students what they think might happen next. After the story, I would connect it to our lesson by asking questions like, “What do we need to do every day to keep our teeth healthy?” This approach captures students’ attention, makes the content relatable, and provides a natural transition into hands-on activities like practicing brushing techniques or sorting healthy and unhealthy foods for teeth.

I will use videos in an upcoming lesson. My science classes will be learning about simple machines, and energy transfer. I will us when they notice energy transfer. I will also use videos to help introduce our project on simple machines- designing Rube Goldberg machine. This approach will hold the student's attention as I will use videos that appeal to students' interest (athletics, farming, playing the piano, etc)

  8. I will use videos in this upcoming lesson about addiction (specifically meth). It is a documentary about a young couple that uses meth for the first time. It has the kids hooked instantly. They get to hear the 911 calls and see photos as well. Sadly in the end both the male and female pass away (as they get paranoid and end up dying in a snowstorm). This video also shows footage of jail mates, and shows what they look like from meth use and what chlanneges they are now facing.

I want to use a video I found about a 16 year old student making mugs and selling them, and she actually made enough money to buy her car. I do challenges with them. My husband suggested having an auction to buy mugs, and that the money could be split for some needy families in the community. These are 2 ideas that could be meshed together. I need to check with adm. on this idea and see if there would be a time and place this could be appropriate.

To begin a new unit, I typicaly show a really cool video of the skill that we will be working on. For example, to begin our jump rope unit, I play a video of professional jump ropers jumping to get the kids interested in learning the skill. I typically do this for the start of every unit. Throughout the unit, my attention grabber is a quick game or activity that focus on the overall skill that we are working on. If we are getting ready for our pacer test, I usually have an introduction game of noodle tag as this focuses on cardiovascular endurance. I try to get the kids moving as soon as they enter the gym to get some of the energy out so that they are ready to listen to the instructions for the game of the day. This next week we are playing soccer. My attention grabber for this is a little mini challenge when the enter the gym. Students partner up, get one ball, and then start in the middle of the gym face to face. They then pass the ball to each other back and forth. As the ball comes to them, they must trap it. If they trap the ball successfully, they both get to take 1 step back. If the ball gets past them, they both have to come to the center of the gym and start over. We see which group can get all the way to the wall first and trap the ball successfully.
