Choose one of the activities described on the last pages of Chapter 6 that you’ve never used with your students before. Plan to implement it in one of your lessons as soon as possible. Then, come back here and describe what you did and how it went. Why is it important to step out of your comfort zone on occasion?
I'm currently still on Christmas break, but during break I created a choice Board for Spelling that will be implemented for the first time next week. They will all receive a board consisting of 16 squares, four across and four down. In each square there is an activity to practice the spelling and meaning of their weekly spelling words. Their task will be to choose four of the activities and complete them each week. They will get their boards on Monday, and it will need to be completed and turned in on Friday. On Fridays, when their boards are turned in and done well, they will receive a Jolly Rancher! I think when students feel like they are in control, they will be more motivated for success.

ReplyDeleteThe one strategy that I would like to implement into my classroom is the Digital Breakouts. I would like to incorporate this into all subjects in my classroom. The first subject I would do it in is Math. I have already started creating a breakout for division. I think it would be a perfect way to teach students the steps of long division and help them remember the steps because they will ave something to connect it to. The will be great for all learners because they will work in groups to remember. i will also group them by ability so that they are all challenged in one way or the other.
One of the activities that I would like to implement in one of my lessons is peer tutoring. In math, students are working on solving addition and subtraction story problems with using the strategies of drawing a picture or using cubes. I teach first grade and at times, it’s difficult to implement peer tutoring, but I feel confident that I do have students that are ready to tutor their peers that need support. This would allow those students that are peer tutoring to be able to share their thinking and strategies with their peers. The peers that need support this would allow students to learn from each other. I think this would be a very positive activity to implement in my math lesson.
ReplyDeleteOne of the activities that I would like to implement is peer tutoring. I have thought about the idea of having students teach each other their instruments before but haven't committed to it. Students are always excited to try a new instrument, but it wouldn't benefit their main instrument or the full band, so I have avoided it. If I approach trying a new instrument as peer tutoring, the aim can instead be for the teaching to be doing the majority of the learning by refreshing the basics for themselves.
ReplyDeleteOne of the activities I plan to implement are choice boards. I like the idea of giving students options and letting them have autonomy in what they want to do based on their interests. One way I implemented this in my classroom this week was for our conservation project. Students were able to pick from a list of different conservation efforts: pollution, recycling, etc. They will have a set list for what they have to do for each topic but they'll be able to do it at their pace and the end result can look how they want it to. They were also able to choose how they wanted to do their project: on paper by hand or they could do it digitally through a site like Canva. It's important to step out of your comfort zone because it may open you up to new ideas, but can also help you build confidence. You'll never know unless you try!

ReplyDeleteI chose to implement somewhat of a highbred of choice boards and think-pair-share to give my students an opportunity to more deeply investigate something that they have an interest in or can maybe relate to in their lives. While studying the U.S. Constitution students were asked to choose a constitutional amendment, research it, then share not only share what they learned but discuss with others why it's important and how it relates to their lives in todays world. The lesson when fairly well but since students were allowed to choose there where a lot of 1st and 2nd Amendments, it would be nice in the future to maybe assign groups or eliminate the choice to have more amendment be chosen. Stepping out of your comfort zone is important to experiment with new strategies to see what works and doesn't in your class and promotes professional growth.
I implemented choice boards for my students, allowing them to decide which area of the room they wanted to play in and which activity they wanted to engage with. I observed that students were more enthusiastic and independent in their play, and they demonstrated increased engagement and decision-making skills. Stepping out of my comfort zone is important because it allows me to try new strategies, better meet the needs of my students, and model flexibility and risk-taking as a valuable part of learning.

ReplyDeleteStepping out of your comfort zone can create an "aha!" moment - all it takes is that one time, so definitely worth it.
ReplyDeleteI think I will do the quick write, think-pair share, turn and talk as a do now. "What consequences come with teen pregnancy?" I think the students will be surprised by the other "consequences" their classmates came up with- and it will help them realize how life-changing teen pregnancy actually is.

ReplyDeleteI chose self-assessment. I had students self-assess their soccer dribbling and how much control they feel they have when they are dribbling the ball around the gym with their feet. It was eye-opening to see some of their responses. Some were very confident in their skills and told me which part of the foot they use when they dribble. Others said that they were not good at dribbling at all. Overall I actually felt like the self assessment was an accurate depiction of what I see in PE. I think it's important for us as educators to step out of our comfort zones and try new things in the classroom. It may not work out, however, it could also be something that engages our students and helps them grasp a concept better. We will never know unless we try.

ReplyDeleteConcept mapping
I gave them a paper with blanks where then needed to map the definition and example of each of the seven elements of art... (the example was their own drawing) and the principals of design. These were discussed and as we did our lessons I referred to this asking questions, and using vocabulary and how we were seeiing/using them in our art.
To grow, to challenge growth in our students it is important to step out of our comfort zone.
